CAPE TOWN - Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu on Wednesday announced "steady improvements" in this year's audit outcomes of national and provincial government departments and entities.
However the health, education and public works sectors have been singled out as needing the most attention.
Government has a R1 trillion budget.
National and provincial departments and their entities have been audited.
Of the 469 departments and entities, 25 percent received clean audits.
Fifteen departments in the health, education and public works sectors received a qualified or disclaimed opinion.
Makwetu said he is concerned.
"Those are the ones that have nationally failed the audit test in terms of the analysis we were given."
Irregular expenditure also remains a concern at a whopping R62,7 billion in the year under review.
