'New pass requirements will take time to phase in'
The Education Dept has told schools across SA to adjust exam scores for pupils in grades 7, 8 and 9.
JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department says it will take some time for new pass requirements for grades seven to nine to be properly phased in.
The department has told schools across the country to adjust exam scores for pupils in grades 7, 8 and 9.
Last year, pupils only needed to pass seven of their nine subjects and score 40 percent in one official language to progress to the next grade.
This year, with the introduction of 2014 Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS), the bar was raised to eight subjects and 50 percent for a pupil's home language.
The department's Elijah Mhlanga says an increasing number of pupils are failing and the department decided to adjust the marks of pupils battling to pass on that basis.
"We felt we needed to put in place an interim measure to help us manage the transition."
