CAPE TOWN - Cape Town's emergency services says that since the start of the fire season this month firefighters have responded to more than 1,000 structural and vegetation fires across the Peninsula.

In a recent incident, three shacks were gutted after a blaze tore through a Philippi informal settlement yesterday.

Twelve people were left homeless.

The city's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said, "We appeal to residents not to leave flames unattended also to ensure that they switch off all electrical appliances."

The city is investigating the cause of the shack fire.
