ZIMBABWE - Zimbabwe's information minister has criticised reports claiming President Robert Mugabe graded his wife's PhD thesis.

Grace Mugabe was awarded a PhD from the University of Zimbabwe in September but there's been much speculation the degree was given hastily and fraudulently.

Information Minister Jonathan Moyo says claims that the Zimbabwean president had a hand in awarding Grace's degree are preposterous.

He told the official Herald newspaper that Mugabe was merely commenting on her draft thesis.

Outgoing head of the Zanu-PF Women's League Oppah Muchinguri told a rally earlier this week that the first lady had spent sleepless nights working on her PhD while Mugabe marked it.

Muchinguri's remark was made at a rally at Grace's orphanage earlier this week.

But the minister is adamant her comments have been taken out of context.

However, observers have been quick to latch onto those words as evidence that the president played a key role in Grace acquiring the degree from Zimbabwe's most prestigious university in record time.
