CAPE TOWN - Zimbabweans living in South Africa have until 31 December to apply for the new so-called dispensation permit.

More than 60 percent of the 250,000 Zimbabweans currently in the country have already applied for the document.

The new permit is valid until the end of 2017.

Zimbabweans who were in South Africa illegally in 2009 are granted an opportunity to legalise their stay via the permit.

The aim is to, among others, create a record of Zimbabweans who had until then been living here without the necessary documents.

Applications are submitted via a website.

Zimbabweans are then issued with a barcode, a track and trace number and a date for a face to face interview.

Biometric photographs and fingerprints are also taken.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba says completed applications are submitted electronically to the department for adjudication.

The process should be completed within a month or two.
