Teachers to take competency before promotion
A new policy will see teachers complete a competency test before any promotion takes place.
JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department says it's in the process of introducing a new policy for teachers to complete competency tests if they want to be promoted as well as other strategies to improve the quality of education.
On Monday, the department confirmed information revealed in a Parliamentary reply that it intended introducing the tests in all schools to ensure the right teachers are appointed to leadership roles.
Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says this may take some time to implement, but they are discussing a number of options to ensure teachers are competent and pupils receive the best education.
"We intend on implementing this as soon as the processes are final. But it's a very important component when trying to develop teachers who are better skilled and better qualified."
