JOHANNESBURG - Police say they have arrested more than 500 people linked to serious crimes in Gauteng this week alone.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) says a team of experienced detectives revisited unresolved cases and made the arrests.

Among those apprehended is a man allegedly linked to 25 rape cases.

The police's Vinesh Moonoo says the arrests are a major achievement especially with the festive season just around the corner.

"Possible suspects who have been identified but not yet arrested who are linked to crime scenes but have not been arrested, suspects whose details have been released but have not been arrested."

Those who have been arrested during this week, including people linked to murder, rape, robbery and hijackings will appear in various courts in the next few days.

POLICE ARREST SERIAL RAPIST

Police have arrested an alleged serial rapist who they believe can be linked to more than 25 crimes.

The man was arrested in connection with a robbery earlier today but police then realised he has been linked to various rape cases reported in the Soshanguve and Booysens area.

Moonoo says its believed the man raped at least 25 women between 2008 and this year.

He says he was arrested for a less serious offence and only after the police scrutinised his profile, did they realise he may be the man they have been looking for the past six years.

"At this stage, the suspect is only connected to cases in the Gauteng area."

He is expected to appear in court soon.

CAPE TOWN ARREST

Police have raided a well-known drug house in Muizenberg and confiscated drugs.

At least 60 packets of tik were found on the property situated in Falcon Street today.

Officials carried out the operation after receiving a tip-off.

The police's Thembinkosi Kinana says, "A male suspect was arrested and will be charged with dealing in narcotics. He is currently being detained at the Muizenberg Police Station."

Kinana says the suspect will appear at the Muizenberg Magistrates Court soon.

BODY FOUND IN SOUTHERN CAPE

Southern Cape police are investigating the possibility of a rape, after the body of a George teenager was found near the N2 highway.

The victim's battered body was found in an open field with her throat slit this week.

The police's Bernadine Steyn says, "The partially clothed victim was found in a field by a passer-by. The 17-year-old girl had wounds in her back, chest and neck."
