Bringing down the house: Parliamentary fiasco in GIFs
The latest chaos, catch phrases and drama from Parliament, in case you missed it.
JOHANNESBURG - Did you miss out on the chaos and drama of the first hour of this afternoon's Parliamentary session? Worried that the catch phrases of the day are going to pass you by?
Never fear… Here are some of the highlights of the craziness in the National Assembly, captured in all their GIF glory.
It all started when Speaker Baleka Mbete was tackled by opposition MPs over her attempts to change the running order of the day's events.
DA and EFF members started chanting "You must go" at Mbete:
At one point, Mbete tried to tell the DA parliamentary leader to take his seat.
Mmusi Maimane must surely have been channeling his inner Amy Winehouse when he replied "No, no, no…"
The Speaker was heckled repeatedly from the opposition benches, with MPs demanding she recognise them.
Her retort? "I don't actually want to hear from any of you".
Eventually Mbete must have felt sorry for the EFF's redoubtable Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala when she allowed her to speak.
"Honourable Speaker, my hand is up and now it is tired."
As the hubbub continued, fellow DA member John Steenhuisen asked Mbete to surrender her chair. Perhaps he deserved a prize for stating the obvious.
"You have lost control of the house..."
The Speaker responded with what was probably the most accurate quip of the day: "You wish!"
