CAPE TOWN - Thousands of unclaimed Identity Documents are stacking up at Home Affairs Department offices across the country.

More than 430,000 barcoded green ID books have not been collected.

The department's Mkuseli Apleni says since uncollected IDs cannot be destroyed, they are moved to storage.

"We allow for a period of about two to three months, that ID is in that office. And thereafter we take those IDs back to head office because it's a risk to have those lying around."
