CAPE TOWN - Five suspects have been arrested for allegedly attempting to rob the Howard Shopping Centre in Pinelands.

Police say security at the shopping centre noticed four suspicious looking men walking through the mall yesterday.

The men later walked from the centre to a white car where a driver was waiting for them.

After getting into the car the vehicle drove off and circled the mall.

Security then alerted police.

The police's Frederick van Wyk says they found a loaded gun in the car.

"Police found two unlicensed 9mm firearms , the five men were immediately arrested and taken to a police station."

GAUTENG PROVINCE

Shopping centres in Gauteng have also experienced robberies since the beginning of the year.

Police in the province said they will continue to increase visibility and security at malls.

Since the beginning of the year malls in Soweto, Cresta, Northgate and Centurion were also targeted.
