PRETORIA - Two people have been injured after the handmade explosive devices they had been experimenting with detonated.

The pair had taken the bombs, which they had apparently made themselves, to an open field in the west of Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Wanda Oliver says one of the devices, containing nails and screws, detonated in their vehicle while the other went off a short distance nearby.

Both men were injured in the incident.

"They are between 45-50 years of age. Both were arrested at the scene and taken to hospital where they are being treated under police guard."

Oliver says it's not yet clear what the pair's intention was but this will form part of their investigation.

She says the pair will appear in court next week.
