Soweto accident: Minister wants life sentence for truck driver
Dipuo Peters says the man who knocked down and killed a child in Soweto must be sent to jail for good.
JOHANNESBURG - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters says the truck driver who knocked over and killed a 4-year-old child in Soweto must be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Transport Department's Tiyani Rikhotso says the minister is calling on the authorities to leave no stone unturned and to ensure that the suspect is brought to book.
Preliminary investigations have found that the 27-year-old was apparently drunk at the time.
It's also been revealed that he did not have his driver's license in his possession when police questioned him at the scene.
The child, who was certified dead at a local hospital, was standing near a gate at her parents' house at the time of the accident.
The truck driver has been charged with culpable homicide and is expected in court soon.
