JOHANNESBURG - Hamony Gold says it has decided to shut down its Kusasalethu mine in Westonaria for two weeks to clear the area of illegal miners following three fires last month.

Kusasalethu is responsible for about 14 percent of Harmony Gold's total production and the company stands to lose 20 percent of this during the two weeks.

Company spokesperson Marian Van der Walt says 105 illegal miners were arrested last month.

"We have also subjected about 25 of our own employees to disciplinary action who's been involved in aiding these illegal miners."

She says most of them are underground workers but there are some supervisors involved.
