JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi has confirmed there has been severe structural damage to the East Road bridge across the N12 Highway near Eldorado Park.

He's warned it poses a high risk to motorists.

The overhead bridge was badly damaged last Thursday when it was hit by a heavily loaded truck and may take months to repair.

Vadi says nearly half of the bridge is completely unsafe.

"We have called in a bridge engineer and its quite clear that extraordinary measures need to be taken to secure the safety of motorists on the East Road bridge and the N12 freeway."
