CAPE TOWN - Local initiatives look to launch Atlantis as the Western Cape's new green economic hub.

The town is earmarked for development to grow the province's green technology sector and promote the community's manufacturing potential.

Atlantis, chosen for its unused industrial tracts of land, has long struggled with a high unemployment rate.

Billions of rands in renewable energy investments have been projected for the region over the next few years.

The City's Trade and Investment Director, Tim Harris says "There's a whole lot of opportunity emerging in the space, it's an advantage the Western Cape has, we've got a lot of wind and sun. With the movement globally towards cleantech and green energy solutions, it becomes an natural advantage for our city and for our region."
