JOHANNESBURG - Police have arrested two armed suspects after a dramatic high-speed car chase and shootout between Kempton Park and Buccleuch, north of Johannesburg.

There's a heavy police presence in Buccleuch following this morning's dramatic shootout.

A group of armed men were trying to escape from police after stealing cigarettes from a truck in Glen Marais.

They were traveling in a Toyota Quantum and a Volkswagen Golf, pursued by members of the Flying Squad and a police helicopter.

When they arrived at Pretoria Main Road, some of the suspects jumped out and hijacked a Jeep, but crashed the vehicle under the N1 bridge near the Cell C building.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says they then tried to escape on foot.

"Police were pursuing them and a helicopter had already joined the chase by that stage. One of the suspects ran onto the highway. He was knocked by a truck, but wasn't injured."

Police opened fire, but no one was wounded.

Two suspects were arrested and an R5 rifle was recovered.

Several suspects who fled the scene in the Quantum are still at large.
