Two of them were arrested following the shootout near the busy N1 highway.

Motorists were left in shock at the sight of a police helicopter hovering above the highway just moments before police opened fire and arrested one suspect.

Gauteng police have confirmed that no shots were fired from the helicopter.

But a woman says she saw shots being fired from the chopper.

"I saw the police, he had a gun and he fired it. I saw him. I heard it."

The suspect had crashed a hijacked vehicle under the bridge near the Cell-C building after a dramatic speed chase from Glen Marais.

His co-accused was then also apprehended and an R5 rifle was recovered at the scene.

But the police's Lungelo Dlamini says more suspects are at large.

"The other suspects, I think they were driving a Quantum, that's where they loaded the cigarettes. We are not sure how many there were."
