Dept promises tighter laws as initiation deaths climb
Thirty six teenage boys died in the Eastern Cape during the winter initiation season.
JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department has promised tighter laws as initiation deaths continue to climb.
Authorities convened a three-day summit on Wednesday as the province looks at ways to curb initiate deaths.
The department's Mamkeli Ngam says laws will be tightened.
"Failure to have those kinds of requirements available will ensure that we dismantle that initiation school and arrest the owner of that school as a matter of urgency."
