CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) has called for a crackdown on illegal guns and says the law should be amended to limit the number of guns people may own.
In an address to journalists at Parliament, the party's national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa called for harsher sentences to be handed down against those found guilty of possessing illegal firearms and negligent owners.
Kodwa referred to the recent wounding of ANC Member of Parliament Jackson Mthembu and the fatal shooting of Bafana Bafana captain Senzio Meyiwa, but stressed that ordinary citizens, daily face death and injury from criminals using stolen weapons.
Kodwa also called on the judiciary to show no mercy in sentencing those convicted of crimes involving illegal guns and negligent gun owners.
Kodwa says the ANC's campaign must involve all South Africans, not just party members.
