Social media abuzz with tributes for Senzo Meyiwa

The death of the star has been trending on social media with international stars expressing shock & sadness.

JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana & Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa has been trending on social media, with thousands all around the world sending their condolences.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper was shot and killed by armed men at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's house in Vosloorus on the East Rand on Sunday night.

On Instagram on Monday, Spanish National Captain Iker Casillas posted a picture of Meyiwa holding up the Real Madrid man's jersey, which they exchanged recently when Bafana Bafana played against Spain.

The post already has 150,000 likes.

Former Bafana Bafana teammate Andile Jali also took to Twitter to express his shock of the news, as well as Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard.

Kaizer Chiefs founder Kaizer Motaung says Meyiwa's death is a loss, not just to Orlando Pirates or Bafana Bafana, but to the whole country.

"His family has lost, Orlando Pirates has lost and the entire soccer fraternity has lost. I refer to this as a national tragedy."

There've been no arrests at this stage, but police are still offering a R250,000 reward for any information which may lead them to the suspects.

However, identikits are being prepared, and may be released sometime today.
