WC authorities probe weekend fires
Since the start of the weekend, 57 dwellings were gutted and close to 200 people were displaced.
CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is investigating the high number of shack fires that have occurred in recent weeks.
Since the start of the weekend, 57 dwellings were gutted and close to 200 people were displaced.
Disaster risk management teams have supplied relief aid to affected residents and again urged the public to be vigilant around flammable materials.
The city's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says, "This is a concern for the city. We are in the process of rolling out intensified public awareness and looking at areas where we've discovered problems."
In other fire related investigations, Wildfire Services say they are mapping the extent of the damage following the Bainskloof blaze.
Firefighters battled the flames until the early hours of Sunday morning.
It's believed an unattended braai, fanned by strong winds, led to the outbreak of the veld fire outside Wellington.
Cape Winelands Fire department's Ian Ross says, "Guys must not light up open fires in the summer season. With the South-Easter blowing like that, it's a recipe for disaster."
