Train vandalism amounts to R60m
A suspect was arrested shortly after he allegedly torched 19 train carriages on Sunday night.
CAPE TOWN - The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) says the alleged vandalism of 19 train carriages in Salt River amounts to R60 million in damages.
A suspect was arrested shortly after he allegedly torched the train carriages on Sunday night.
He's expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
Prasa says its engineers worked through the night following the alleged arson attack.
The rail agency says it's managed to salvage three of the torched trains.
Prasa chief executive Mosenngwa Mofi says it's the eighth attack on rolling stock this year.
He says they've lost 35 coaches over the past 10 months.
Mofi says at this stage they don't know whether the suspect in custody worked alone or had accomplices.
He's called for harsh sentences for those found guilty.
