Woolworths horrified by 'offensive' form of protest

Woolworths says placing a pig's head near Kosher or Halaal food is horrific and offensive to customers.

CAPE TOWN - Woolworths says it is appalled after pro-Palestine demonstrators placed a pig's head in the Kosher and Halaal aisle at one of its Cape Town stores.

The incident occurred at the Sea Point branch yesterday.

Members affiliated to the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) have been implicated.

Woolworths says placing a pig's head near Kosher or Halaal food is unacceptable, horrific and offensive to customers and employees.

A picture of the act was posted to social media where it was widely criticised.

Security staff monitored hours of CCTV footage and found the incident lasted only about 10 seconds.

It shows a man placing a pig's head in the isle and taking a picture.

Woolworths is considering measures to prevent protests of this nature in future.

Cosas has refused to comment.

Last month, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) demonstrated outside Woolworths in the Cavendish Shopping Mall.

They called on the retailer to stop selling Israeli products.

Woolworths responded by saying while it was saddened by the tragic consequences of the conflict in Gaza, none of its products were sourced from the occupied territories.
