ZIMBABWE - Media groups in Zimbabwe have lashed out at Grace Mugabe for intimidating independent journalists.

The country's biggest journalists union says the first lady singled out reporters from private papers at a rally last week, putting them at risk from a volatile crowd.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) says it condemns any attempt by powerful individuals to "threaten, silence or endanger journalists."

During the rally, Mugabe accused some independent journalists of being opposition activists.

She wanted them to identify themselves in front of thousands of her supporters which they didn't do.

ZUJ says attempting to single out journalists in a politically-charged environment compromises their safety and security.

But the state-run Herald, which supports the first lady, says the she made the comments ingest.
