JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has called on authorities to work swiftly and find the gunmen who shot and wounded the party's Member of Parliament (MP) Jackson Mthembu.

Mthembu was shot in Emalahleni while withdrawing money from an ATM machine on Sunday.

He is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being shot in the cheek.

No arrests have been made and police say they are investigating a case of armed robbery but have not yet ruled out the possibility of adding an additional charge of attempted murder.

The party's Moloto Mothapo says, "We implore the police to leave no stone unturned to ensure that those savage criminals face the full might of the law."
