PTA explosion: Military cannon kills man
A man has died after tampering with a military projectile he apparently mistook for scrap metal.
PRETORIA - One man has died and another has being left seriously injured following an explosion at a scrapyard in Pretoria West.
Police say that a military canon projectile exploded, but investigations are still underway into how this happened.
Police spokeswoman Ann Poortman says that bomb squad is still at the scene accessing three other missiles.
It's believed the man was trying to break open the metal casing, which he apparently mistook for a piece of scrap metal.
Bomb experts say the man died instantly while eyewitnesses say he was blown to pieces.
A man told Eyewitness News that he was left traumatised at the sight of the man's remains scattered on the pavement.
"It was a horrible sight. I cannot get it out of my head."
Emergency officials say they are on scene, but awaiting further instruction from police before they can gain access the scene.
Poortman says it's still uncertain how the scrapyard attained the missiles, but this will form part of the police investigation.
