Security guard killed in CT mall robbery

CAPE TOWN - A G4S security guard was shot and killed after yet another mall robbery, this time at the Waterstone Village Centre near Somerset West.

Police say robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

The hit took place while the security guards were collecting money.

This is the fifth armed robbery at a shopping centre over the past few weeks in Cape Town alone.

Shopping centres including Canal Walk, Tyger Valley and Somerset Mall were all targeted.

Canal Walk and Tyger Valley were hit three times each recently.

Armed robbers also targeted the Parow, Somerset, Blue Route and Zevenwacht shopping malls in.


Police in the province said they will continue to increase visibility and security at malls.

Police arrested six men who allegedly robbed a Vodacom shop at Centurion Mall on Friday and just a few hours later, arrested one suspect who was allegedly part of a gang targeting a Telkom store at the Irene Village Mall also in Centurion.

Since the beginning of the year malls in Soweto, Cresta, Northgate and Centurion were also targeted.
