CAPE TOWN - Police are trying to establish how many robbers escaped the scene of an armed robbery at the Vodacom store in Centurion Mall.

Lyttelton police arrested six people outside the mall minutes after the robbery yesterday and recovered two bags of cellphones and three firearms.

Two suspects were also wounded when police opened fire on the group outside the mall.

Last month the police stepped up efforts to clamp down on mall robberies after 11 heists were reported at shopping centres in four weeks.

The police's Noxolo Kweza says this is a major achievement for the police.

"No one was injured and there is no indication that cellphones from the customers were taken. The suspects wanted the manager to give them cellphones from the safe."

In Cape Town another Vodacom shop at the Bayside Mall was robbed while a gang targeted a store at Canal Walk on Thursday.
