Police arrest Nyanga murder suspect

The man allegedly shot and killed a police detective and is wanted for several murder cases.

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have arrested a man for allegedly shooting and killing a police officer in Nyanga.

The 38-year-old officer was murdered last night while pursuing the suspect whose been wanted for several murder cases in the area.

The constable died on the scene.

The police's Frederick van Wyk said, "A 38-year-old on duty police detective constable was fatally wounded at New Flats at about 6:30 pm whilst pursuing a suspect wanted for several murder cases. The officer died from injuries sustained on the scene."

The 2013/2014 crime statistics were released in Pretoria last month by Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.

It's emerged that South Africa is less safe than it was two years ago and that murders, house robberies, and hijackings are on the increase.
