JOHANNESBURG - Police are on a manhunt for suspects who shot and forced open a police truck carrying 28 prisoners in Pretoria.

It's understood the prisoners were being carried from the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court to Newlock Prison when a group of armed men ambushed police who were heavily armed with AK-47 rifles yesterday.

While police have re-arrested 16 prisoners 12 are still at large.

The police's Doniah Mothutsane says no stone will be left unturned until they apprehend the suspects.

"They started shooting at the police and they force opened the door and no arrests have been made yet."

It's understood the suspects managed to escape in a silver Audi and a white Golf equipped with blue lights and sirens.

The police are appealing to the public to come forward with information.
