JOHANNESBURG - Police have now confirmed 12 prisoners managed to escape during this afternoon's ambush in Pretoria.

A group of gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles surrounded a police truck.

The inmates were being taken from the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court to the Newlock Prison when the vehicle was cornered.

The gang opened fire and forced open a door freeing 28 prisoners.

The police's Doniah Mothutsane says, "A pistol was also found at the scene, a police investigation continues."

Police say the suspects cornered the vehicle outside the George Mukhari Hospital.

It's understood the suspects managed to escape in a silver Audi and a white Golf equipped with blue lights and sirens.

It's believed the suspects were last seen heading towards Soshanguve.

Mothutsane says they are busy with a head count.

"Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who shot at a police truck and forced open the door for the prisoners. The truck was carrying detainees from the GaRrankuwa Magistrates Court to Newlock prison in Pretoria."
