CAPE TOWN - A man has been arrested following the death of a policeman in Khayelitsha.

The 37-year-old police officer was gunned down on Thursday night while trying to arrest a suspect.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) member, who was based at the Lingelethu West satellite police station, succumbed to his wounds in hospital shortly after the shooting.

The police's Frederick van Wyk says, "Swift response by police members resulted in the arrest of a man, aged 24 years old. A murder case is under investigation."

At least eight police officers have been killed in the Western Cape this year.
