CAPE TOWN - Hospitality assocation Fedhasa says it's trying to prevent food wastage but its efforts will never be enough.

The association's Chris Gardiner says the South African hospitality industry has various charities and projects their members are involved with to ensure excess food goes to those who need it.

Today marks World Food Day and Gardiner says there are other food industries that need more pressure to keep waste down.

"I think there's a bigger concern from the farmer through to the producer and what is being done with waste food on the farms not actually making its way through to the industry itself."

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (Gain) says malnutrition and the poor quality of food is driving the contraction of deadly diseases among the country's population.

A recent report by human rights group Oxfam has revealed more than half of South Africans are either on the brink of hunger or are already not eating enough food daily.
