'Healthcare financing a major stumbling block'
Aaron Motsoaledi says universal health coverage has to be embraced to ensure equitable healthcare.
JOHANNESBURG - Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says universal health coverage has to be embraced to ensure equitable healthcare for all South Africans.
Motsoaledi addressed about 500 delegates attending the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) conference in Johannesburg.
The department wants the National Health Insurance plan in place by 2030.
Motsoaledi said the private sector had the bulk of healthcare workers, but this sector served only 16 percent of the population.
The minister added that healthcare financing was the major stumbling block to ensure equitable services for all South Africans.
Universal health coverage has become an international issue and will be discussed at the United Nations next year.
