Bafana Bafana draw with Congo
It was a goalless match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium but Bafana took a step closer to AFCON.
JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana took another small step in qualifying for the African Cup of Nations in 2015 with a goalless draw against Congo at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday night.
Shakes Mashaba's young side failed to create any clear cut chances during the 90 minutes, but did have a chance to snatch all three points when Mandla Masango put the ball in the back of the net. The ref however ruled his effort out for offside.
Heading into the match in buoyant mood after a 2-0 win over the same opponents on Saturday, Bafana were dealt an early blow before kickoff with the news that defender Thabo Matlaba was ruled out after failing to recover from an Achilles' tendon injury.
In his place came SuperSport United defender Sibusiso Khumalo, who proved too comfortable in the side as he oversaw another clean sheet for the team, their fourth of the campaign.
Bafana now have a chance to secure a spot in next year's tournament with a win in one of the two matches next month against Sudan and Nigeria.
Should the team qualify for the continental tournament, it would be their first successful qualification campaign since 2008.
