JOHANNESBURG - A man has been arrested for murder in Soweto.

It's alleged the suspect and killed a man while he was drinking with friends in Meadowlands.

Police were alerted and arrested the suspect at his home last night.

The police's Sibusiso Chauke says illegal firearms were also found.

"The serial number of the revolver was filed off. A murder case was opened and an investigation is underway. The suspect will be appearing in the Protea Magistrates Court tomorrow."

In an indication that South Africa is less safe than it was two years ago, it's emerged murders, house robberies, and hijackings are on the increase.

The 2013/2014 crime statistics were released in Pretoria last month by Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.
