Kya Sands fire-affected to receive relief aid
Over the past few days the private sector, concerned locals and relief groups have donated.
JOHANNESBURG - Relief operations are underway in the fire stricken Kya Sands informal settlement, west of Johannesburg.
Hundreds of families are expected to receive relief packages today after they lost their homes when a blaze ripped through the area.
People have been queuing and waiting patiently for relief packages. Over the past few days the private sector, concerned locals and relief groups have donated essential items which are now being distributed to affected families."
Residents say they are grateful for the help.
Meanwhile the volunteers from the Judah African Church are calling on members of the public to donate more food needed for the thousands of people that have been left homeless.
Officials from the City of Johannesburg estimate more than 1,200 homes have been destroyed after two separate fires ripped through the Kya Sands informal settlement last week, leaving around 2,000 people destitute.
