SABC chair's nearly R1m salary raises alarm bells
Ellen Tshabalala earned R936k for chairing 34 board meetings & attending 36 committee meetings.
CAPE TOWN - According to the Support Public Broadcasting Coalition (SOS), South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board chairperson Ellen Tshabalala's nearly R1 million salary should be raising alarm bells.
Tshabalala earned R936, 000 for chairing 34 board meetings and attending 36 committee meetings at the broadcaster in the last financial year.
SOS member Kate Skinner says her salary shows she is too involved in the day to day running of the broadcaster.
"There should definitely be alarm bells ringing because you should actually be defining what the role is of the board and what the role is of management and those should be different roles."
A preliminary Parliamentary inquiry is currently underway into a potential debacle surrounding the SABC chair's qualifications.
The chairperson of Parliament's Communications Portfolio Committee, Joyce Moloi-Moropa, has confirmed they are looking into allegations Tshabalala lied about her credentials.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) asked the committee in July to determine if she in fact does have a BComm and diploma in Labour Relations from the University of South Africa (Unisa).
Following the inquiry, it will then be decided if a full investigation should be launched.
