Fire rages in Kya Sands informal settlement
It’s not yet known what sparked the blaze but residents say it started about an hour ago.
JOHANNESBURG - A fire has broken out at the Kya Sands informal settlement in northwestern Johannesburg.
It's not yet known what sparked the blaze but residents say it started about an hour ago.
Stats Medical says community members and emergency officials are working to extinguish the fire.
Spokesperson Dave da Silva says they're also setting up a temporary medical facility on the scene.
"There are a number of fire engines here and tankers with extra water, but there are undoubtedly going to be victims as well. We are just setting up medical headquarters in the meantime and we'll see to the wounded as they come out."
Last month, 15 shacks were gutted when another fire hit the area.
One resident said people are deeply worried.
"Some of the people have managed to get their goats out and you can see them carrying their chickens. The fire engine can't get in because everything is built on top of each other."
