CAPE TOWN - Security will be stepped up at the Parow Centre after a spate of car robberies and thefts in the past few months.

The Ravensmead Community Policing Forum David van Wyk says his car was stolen from the centre's parking lot last week.

He's since called on the mall's management to take action.

Parow Centre's Pieter De Jager says last month, three cars were stolen from the parking lot, while two cars were stolen in August.

He says suspects have since been arrested in connection with two separate incidents.

De Jager says management is working closely with police to clamp down on these crimes.

"Our guards are vigilant and we have installed the latest technology to assist us with this very sensitive matter."

De Jager adds in last month's incidents, CCTV footage has shown the suspects fleeing in the vehicles within about 20 seconds.

The footage has been handed over to police for investigation.

Last week, Business Against Crime South Africa said there's been a noticeable increase in robberies at Western Cape shopping malls.

Armed robbers have also targeted the Somerset, Blue Route and Zevenwacht shopping malls in recent weeks.

The organisation said jewellery stores appear to be the main targets. Cellphone stores are also being hit.

At the same time, at least 11 Gauteng shopping centres have been hit by robbers in recent weeks.

Many of the robberies have seen electronic stores targeted by armed gangs.
