Helen Joseph victim admitted to a psychiatric hospital
The nurse was brutally assaulted and raped at the Helen Joseph hospital in August.
JOHANNESBURG - A Helen Joseph Hospital rape victim has told Eyewitness News she has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital for observation after her traumatic ordeal at the end of august.
The nurse, who was working the night shift at the facility, was attacked and raped by a man who had gained access to the fourth floor.
She sustained severe injuries and has not yet been able to return to her post.
The nurse says she was meant to return to work last week but she feels she is not ready.
"Psychologically and spiritually I'm not ready to face my work yet."
She has asked for a transfer because she cannot face going back to the same hospital where she was beaten, raped and subjected to electric shocks by a man she believes had keys to the store room.
The mother of one, who has been working at the facility for some time, says she's disappointed that no one has yet been arrested and has again raised questions about security at all government hospitals.
Meanwhile, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union said a stabbing incident at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Friday proves that security at public hospitals is poor.
A security guard was stabbed to death at the hospital following an argument with a colleague.
No arrests have yet been made.
The union's Sizwe Pamla called on Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu to intervene.
