JOHANNESBURG - The owner of a popular bar in Melville is set to appear in court this morning in connection with the murder of former Golden Lions Sevens rugby player, Thulani Popoyi who was found hacked to death outside the bar.

Popoyi's body was allegedly found outside the Dollar Table on the corner of 7th Street with multiple-stab wounds.

It's understood he visited the bar on Saturday evening with a group of friends and was last seen just after 1am when he left to go to the bathroom but never returned.

It's believed there was an altercation between the owner and Popoyi but police are yet to provide clarity.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that the owner of the bar was arrested but said his identity could not be revealed until he appeared in court.

"The victim was found dead outside his pub. Police have been investigating. He was questioned and later arrested and will appear in the Newlands Magistrate court."

Dlamini said they could also not rule out the possibility of more arrests.

Meanwhile, community members are demanding answers following what has been described as Popoyi's brutal death.

Allegations have also surfaced that the bar was operating illegally, but police say this will form part of their investigations.
