JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma says he believes the Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) will survive its current internal divisions among affiliates, just as the African National Congress (ANC) did after its Polokwane elective conference in 2007.
Yesterday, Zuma told delegates at the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) national congress that South Africa needs a 20 year political review to assess how politics has changed in society.
The teachers union is currently holding its eighth elective congress.
Zuma said liberation movements all face several problems but they should be clearly defined.
"Contradictions themselves need to be studied whether they are healthy contradictions or antagonistic."
Cosatu President Sidumo Dlamini said the federation is prepared to act against affiliates in protection of its unity.
"What is very critical is that we move to unite this federation against those who want to destroy it."
Dlamini and Cosatu's other national office bearers met with the ANC's intervention team, assigned to restore unity between rival factions last night.
