JOHANNESBURG - South African Post Office Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Hlekane has been placed on special leave, The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) confirmed on Friday.

Group executive in charge of mail business Janras Kotsi has also been suspended.

The action was taken after a nine-week disruption due to a strike by employees, which has paralysed the delivery of mail.

Casual workers are demanding salary hikes of 15 percent and permanent posts.

CWU's Clyde Mervin says, "The CEO was given special leave and the group executive of mail business has been suspended."
