CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Community Safety Department says plans are in place to establish a task team that will focus on clamping down on illegal shebeens in Khayelitsha.

Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says this suggestion was made during the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry into Policing.

Plato says during the hearings, witnesses' testimonies highlighted that the growing number of illegal shebeens is one of the main causes of crime and violence in the community.

MEC Dan Plato said, "In the Khayaelitsha area alone, about 1400 shebeens operate illegally. They are not licensed and there's just about 36 legal shebeens in the area."

Plato says among other parties, members of the Western Cape Liquor Board, the City's Metro Police and the SAPS will form part of the task team.
