CAPE TOWN - Large sections of the Cape Town CBD have been cordoned off with the city's marathon underway.

The 42.2 kilometre race sees runners on a route which goes through Cape Town and its surroundings.

Participants were gritted by a fresh spring morning as they set out on their run.

The organisers of the race say around 12,000 people have entered all three categories which include a peace run, a fun run and a peace relay which took place on Saturday.

The runners have until 3:30pm to complete today's race.
