Edu. Dept to monitor EC school closures
Dozens of Afrikaans and dual-medium schools in the city locked their gates in protest.
CAPE TOWN - The Basic Education Ministry says it will closely monitor the situation in Port Elizabeth following the closure of several schools there.
Dozens of Afrikaans and dual-medium schools in the city locked their gates in protest against a lack of teaching staff.
Provincial education has admitted it's struggling to find educators for these schools.
It has now given the green light for 170 teaching posts to be filled urgently.
The department's Troy Martins says, "The province has a plan in place with timelines because obviously they need to start preparing for the opening of schools again next year, so we can't have this type of situation continuing."
