CAPE TOWN - Parliament has launched a #KnowYourSpeaker campaign aimed at boosting supporting for National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete who on Wednesday survived a vote of no confidence.

After the defeat of the no-confidence motion brought by opposition parties, @ParliamentofRSA took to Twitter and started a 'know your speaker' campaign.

Ms Mbete is honoured to serve people of South Africa as Speaker of the National Assembly. She is passionate about her job. #KnowYourSpeaker

This sparked a mixed reaction on Twitter, with many asking if Parliament was acting in the best interests of South Africa or the ANC, for which Mbete serves as chairperson.

@ParliamentofRSA not much objectivity here hey? Do you promote all parties equally? #KnowYourSpeaker

#KnowYourSpeaker Using the @ParliamentofRSA twitter handle for self promotion whilst facing a motion of no confidence is abuse of platform.

I didn't realize how tainted Baleka Mbete's image was until I saw #KnowYourSpeaker talk about 10 steps back.

@ParliamentofRSA #KnowYourSpeaker Problem is there is no notion of a 'legitimate opposition' in South Africa. #ANC rules, ok.
