JOHANNESBURG - While police are expected to announce the crime statistics on Friday, Crime Line has urged the authorities to also tell the public what is going to be done to make South Africa safer.

Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega will release the 2013/2014 annual crime statistics in Pretoria.

Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee says the police must not just announce the figures but explain what is being done to tackle crime.

"The police need to beef up their resources and their capacity to deal with crime. We need professional, efficient policing and the only way we're going to do that is to really get to the bottom of some of the major problems within the South African Police Service."

The statistics were originally scheduled to be released on Thursday but the release has been postponed until Friday.
