Mother to undergo mental observation after child found on N1 highway

JOHANNESBURG - A 19-year-old woman, whose 16-month-old son was found wondering on the N1 near the Grasmere offramp has been sent for metal observation by the Vereeniging Magistrates Court.

The young mother was arrested earlier this year after her son narrowly escaped being hit by a truck while walking along the highway.

She was found guilty of attempted murder and child abandonment.

Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo says the mother will return to court at the end of the year.

"The court has decided to refer the mother to Sterkfontein Hospital for mental evaluation and she will appear in court on 2 December."
